The 2012 UMD football team's home opener brought over 5000 fans, and a 38-17 victory over the Winona State Warriors, September 8, 2012. After a scoreless first quarter, and falling behind 7-0, an 89 yard Aaron Roth kickoff return woke up the Bulldog offense. Roth bobbled the kick catch, recovered, and broke 3 tackles before getting the corner and sideline for the return. The UMD defense held, on the next drive and the offense drove 53 yards, finishing with an Austin Sikorski 6 yard touchdown run. After a Winona field goal cut the UMD lead to 14-10, Roth finished a 9 play 75 yard '2 minute' drive with a 15 yard touchdown catch from QB Chase Vogler. Vogler threw his second touchdown pass, in the first drive of the 3rd quarter, a 5 yard toss to Ben Helmer, that put UMD up 28-10. Andrew Brees 33 yard field goal, with 3:26 left in the third quarter made the score 31-10. Austin Sikorski's second 6 yard touchdown run capped off the Bulldog scoring, at the end of the third quarter. Besides the field goal, Andrew Brees was perfect 5 for 5 on extra points as well as kicking the ball out of the end zone for 5 touchbacks.
Overall, the Bulldogs ran 47 times for 292 yards, with Sikorski leading the team with 118 yards on 16 carries, while Roth led the receivers with 5 catches for 67 yards. Vogler's final totals were 12 of 16 for 115 yards and the touchdowns to Roth and Helmer.
