The Bulldogs dropped the first game of a two game series to Minnesota, 5-4 in overtime, October 14, 2011. The Gophers opened the scoring at 4:55 of the first period, on an Erik Haula goal from Nate Schmidt and Nick Bjugstad. Kyle Rau made it 2-0 Minnesota at 11:32, from Jake Hansen and Nate Condon. UMD cut the Gopher lead to 2-1 when freshman Caleb Herbert (from Justin Crandall and Brady Lamb) deeked Gopher Ben Marshall at the right (to the goalie) faceoff dot and lifted a backhand over goaltender Kent Patterson for his first UMD goal. Travis Oleksuk tied the score at 2 at 6:57, from Jack Connolly and Scott Kishel. Rau scored his second goal of the game, on a powerplay, at 10:59 from Rau and Schmidt, putting Minnesota ahead again, 3-2. UMD Tied the game again, when Drew Olson skated into the offense and collected a centering pass from Herbert and buried it past Patterson. Brady Lamb also picked up an assist on that tying goal, at 16:58 of the second period. The third period went scoreless until the 18 minute mark, when Justin Crandall scored his first career Bulldog goal to give UMD a 4-3 lead. The 'Dogs couldn't hold the lead though, giving up the tying goal to Haula, his second of the game (from Bjugstad and Mark Alt,) with Patterson pulled for the extra attacker and forced overtime. Both teams had chances in overtime, but the Gophers capitalized on theirs, getting the game winning goal from Nate Condon, when Taylor Matson passed out of the corner, Condon chipped the puck up then swatted it under Kenny Reiter for the 5-4 Minnesota win.

On Saturday, it was UMD starting fast, with a Travis Oleksuk (from Brady Lamb) blast beating Kent Patterson just 45 seconds into the first period. Jack Connolly (from J.T. Brown and Scott Kishel) made it 2-0 with a 5 on 3 powerplay goal at 7:11. After David Grun was called for a charging penalty, the Gophers' Jake Hansen cut UMD's lead to 2-1. At 16:19 of the period, Friday night's Gopher hero was credited with a goal on a puck that went off the back wall, past Kenny Reiter and off of defeseman Chris Casto and into the net. The Gophers scored their 2 goals on only 4 shots on net in the first period. Minnesota owned the second period, as far as scoring goes, picking up the only 2 goals of the period on only 6 shots. Nick Bjugstad and Condon each scored to put Minnesota up 4-2 after 2 periods. Kyle Rau scored the 5th straight Gopher goal, at 10:02 of the third period, their third powerplay goal of the game to put them up 5-2. UMD's offense didn't give up, with Caleb Herbert scoring his second goal in as many days, at 11:38, and J.T. Brown's individual effort giving him a goal at 14:55. That was as far as UMD could battle back, with Kent Patterson stopping 46 of 50 Bulldog shots for the second night in a row.
