After a brief ceremony uncovering their 2010-11 National Championship banner, the UMD men opened the 2011-12 season with a rematch series vs their NCAA semi-final foe, Notre Dame. UMD trailed 1-0 when Notre Dame's Billy Maday scored at 7:32 of the first period, but UMD's Mike Seidel answered that goal 1:38 later from JT Brown and Jack Connolly. Keegan Flaherty scored his first career goal (not counting an exhibition goal last season) just 2:05 later at 11:15 go put the Dogs ahead 2-1. Former Edina Hornet, Anders Lee, tied the game at 2 just 1:31 later, at 12:46 to end a busy 5 minutes 14 seconds of first period hockey. J.T. Brown put UMD up 3-2 at 5:35 of the second period, with Connolly and goaltender Kenny Reiter picking up assists on Brown's powerplay goal. Notre Dame picked up their own powerplay goal, from Mike Voran, at 14:17 of the period. Travis Oleksuk's goal for the 'Dogs, at 15:36 of the third period, the only goal of the third period, became the game winner for UMD. UMD outshot the Irish 31-17 and was 2-8 on the powerplay. The Bulldogs killed off 4 of their 5 times shorthanded.
