The UMD Bulldog men's hockey team opened their 2012-13 campaign answering some people's questions about where the scoring is going to come from this season, with a convincing 6-2 win vs Ohio State University, Friday night October 12, 2012. Austin Farley was credited for his first Bulldog goal, just 1:05 into the game, when a Tony Cameraseni blast from the faceoff dot deflected off of him past one-time Bulldog goaltender Brady Hjelle, to give UMD a quick lead. OSU answered that goal at 2:56 of the period, scoring a powerplay goal by Anthony Greco. Joe Basaraba (from Wade Bergman) put UMD back ahead at 4:08 of the period, and Mike Seidel (from Austin Farley, Caleb Herbert) put UMD ahead for good just 20 seconds later putting the puck in the net while falling to the ice. Justin Crandall (Herbert, Seidel) made of 4-1 Bulldogs off an awesome diving pass across the blue line by Caleb Herbert found Crandall in the slot for a layup.

The Buckeyes got the lone goal of the second period, as a Matt Johnson shot beat Aaron Crandall through the five hole, making it a 4-2 game.

The third period was dominated by UMD, with with power play goals from Seidel and Andy Welinksi. Seidel (Farley, Herbert) scoring his second goal of the game 3:15 into the period, and Welinski (Chris Casto) scoring on a blast from the top of the faceoff circle to close out the scoring. Aaron Crandall finished the game stopping 25 of 27 shots he faced, getting steadier as the game went on. The Bulldogs were 3 of 8 on the powerplay, with Seidel's goal coming off a faceoff just 7 seconds in to the first advantage.

On Saturday, UMD fell to Ohio State 3-2, with the Buckeyes playing a much tighter defensive game than Friday night. UMD got down early, giving up the first goal to Alex Carlson at 4:16 of the period, then down 2-0 on a goal by Tanner Fritz. The Bulldogs owned the second period, out-shooting Ohio State 13-3, and scoring twice to tie the game. Joe Basaraba (Drew Olson) got the 'Dogs within 1 goal at 11:51 of the second, and Mike Seidel's 3rd goal of the weekend (Chris Casto, Austin Farley) tied the score at 2-2. Ohio State got the game winner from Max McCormick at 6:56 of the third period. UMD had some late flurries in front of Buckeyes' freshman goaltender Collin Olson, playing in his first career game, but the 'Dogs couldn't finish to tie the game. Aaron Crandall stopped 18 of 21 shots he faced, taking the loss.
