The UMD men's hockey team opened it's final season of WCHA hockey with a 2-0 loss to Wisconsin, in the first game of a two game home series, October 26, 2012. Badgers' goaltender Joel Rumpel stopped all 29 UMD shots he faced, as well as Wisconsin blocking a ton of shots in front of him. Matt McNeely stopped 24 of 26 shots he faced, giving up goals to Tyler Barnes and Michael Mersch.

On Saturday, the 'Dogs gave up a 2-0 lead and had to settle for a 2-2 overtime tie. Tony Cameranesi (From Andy Welinski and Mike Seidel) scored with 2 minutes left in the first period, and Keegan Flaherty (Derik Johnson) scored his first of the season with 5 minutes left in the second period. UMD put 37 shots on Wisconsin goaltender Joel Rumpel, while Matt McNeely stopped 19 of 21 Badger shots on his net. The Badger goals were scored by Mark Zengerle at 1:36 of the third period and Michael Mersch at 14:47 of the period.

Saturday night's game featured a reunion for the 1992-93 UMD team that won the WCHA crown, with players such as Derek Plante, Taras Lendzyk, Jon Rohloff, and head coach Mike Sertich taking the ice between the first and second periods.
