The Bulldogs opened their first home playoff series at Amsoil Arena, in the first round WCHA best 2 of 3 series with St. Cloud State, with a 4-2 win on March 11, 2011. J.T. Brown got the 'Dogs on the board first, scoring at 1:42 of the first period. SCSU tied the game less than two minutes later, at 3:30 when David Eddy beat Kenny Reiter for a goal. UMD took the lead for good in the second period, first on a Justin Faulk goal at 7:15, then Mike Connolly scored the eventuall game winner at 15:01. The Huskies' Jared Festler made the game 3-2 at 15:53, scoring from the corner. Kyle Schmidt sealed the victory with an open net goal with 49 seconds left. Kenny Reiter stopped 20 of 22 shots for the win, while Huskies goaltender Mike Lee stopped 26 of 30 Bulldog shots in the loss.
On Saturday, it took 101 minutes, 13 seconds ... or 1:13 into the THIRD overtime, for the Bulldogs to dispatch St. Cloud and move on to the WCHA tourney at The X. Jack Connolly scored two first period goals, at 7:34 and 13:01 to give the 'Dogs a 2-0 lead going into the second period. St. Cloud's David Eddy scored at 3:06 of the second period, and Taylor Johnson scored at 9:20 of the third period, to tie the game at 2. UMD outshot St. Cloud 26-13 over the first and second overtime, and then 2-0 in the third overtime. Both UMD shots in the third overtime came from Mike Connolly, the second the game winning goal on his own rebound for the game winner at 1:13 of the period. Kenny Reiter stopped 37 of 39 shots in gaining the win, while St. Cloud's Mike Lee stopped 61 of 63 shots in the season ending loss.
