Cloquet Girls Fall, Boys Win at Wood City Classic Tournament

The Cloquet girls basketball team fell to Blooming Jefferson 43-36 in their Thursday match of the Wood City Classic in Cloquet.  The Lumberjacks and Jaguars were tied at 19 at halftime, with Cloquet shooting at 25% (6 of 24) and Bloomington Jefferson at only 16% (4 of 25.)  The first half tie was created by an extra three-pointer and 3 more free throws.  The Jaguars outscored the Lumberjacks 24-17 in the second half, largely in part to scoring off of Cloquet turnovers, Cloquet had 8 second half turnovers, and Jefferson 7, but Cloquet couldn’t score on their takeaways.  Kenzie Rathe led Cloquet with 11 points, while Jaden Cofield had 10.  Bloomington Jefferson was led by Gabby Smith’s 11 points and Brooke Fritziar’s 9.

The rest of the game photos (and all of the tourney photos) from the Wood City Classic will be posted over the weekend, after shooting all of the games Friday as well.

The Cloquet boys rallied from a 6 point halftime deficit to soundly defeat Minneapolis Edison 62-50 in the final game on Thursday of the Wood City Classic.  Adam Laine scored 16 first half points to lead the Lumberjacks, who had 13 turnovers leading to 15 points by the Tommies. 

The Cloquet defense stifled Edison in the second half.  After shooting 48% (14-29) in the first half, the Tommies only shot 19% (6 of 31) in the second half, and were out-rebounded by the Lumberjacks in the second half 26 to 17, with Cloquet scoring 10 second chance points off of offensive rebounds.  The ‘Jacks also grabbed a 10 point advantage in the second half from the free throw line, helping them outscore Minneapolis Edison 35-17 for the 2nd half.
